Hyattsville Community Information

Named for its founder, Christopher Clark Hyatt, the city land was first purchased in 1845. With the proximity to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad tracks and the telegraph lines made the area a fine site for a town. The surrounding farmlands were subdivided into housing lots. In 1992, a portion of the city was placed on the National Register of Historic places and was extended recently. Hyattsville was born as a "Beale Town," trading in timber, furs and tobacco in the late 1700s, but was converted to farming as nearby deep water ports for heavier cargo shipping began to flourish.

Hyattsville's older homes now make up the "Historic District." Once a haven for Washington, DC residents, they would escape the heat to their summer cottages northeast of the city. Hyattsville now features town homes and apartments and new condominiums set against historic properties of a century ago.
